De'Von Bailey

District Attorney Dan May has sent the officer involved shooting death of De’Von Bailey to the Grand Jury for investigation. The 19 year old was stopped in connection with a suspected armed robbery and was shot as he ran from police. As he ran his hands were down near his waist and officers told him to raise his hands several times. After he was shot police found a gun in his shorts. The entire shooting and the lead up and aftermath were recorded on police body camera and a neighborhood security camera. An attorney representing the family says it is “too little too late.”
“It’s impossible for us to have any faith that a grand jury can come to a fair conclusion when they’re relying on biased information presented by a biased district attorney.”
That attitude should NOT be surprising since the attorney is more interested in a cash settlement than true and honest justice for the family, the community, the officers and their families or the alleged victims of the deceased. The attorneys and supporters have held protests, rallies, and fund raisers but have been noticeably silent about the alleged victims of De’Von Bailey, instead alleging those criminal investigations are nothing more than character assassination. Before De’Von Bailey is held out as a martyr and victim of racism or police violence people should consider how the alleged young victims of suspected sexual impropriety might feel.
Court records show Devon Malik Bailey listed on an affidavit that says he was accused of sex crimes in El Paso County. I have reviewed that affidavit and am sickened by the allegations. KOAA 5/30 is one of the only media outlets with enough courage and fairness to report the facts. To do so is not character assassination but rather the pursuit of justice for at least two child victims.
According to KOAA... “Court documents reveal Bailey had interactions with police three times since 2015. Charges from two of those incidents were dismissed by the district attorney.Court records also show Bailey was facing charges tied to two victims. The charges include Criminal Attempt- sexual assault on a child by one in position of trust. Court records show Bailey pled *not guilty* to the charges.”
When I interviewed the young man who was stopped with Bailey before the shooting I was told Bailey was carrying the gun because he was concerned about the allegations against him.
